What factors to SBA lenders look at these days?

Factors that are more important at this time are work experience and how it relates to the business being purchased, and if the owner is willing to carry a seller note (say 10%, etc.)

What is the least amount that I need to put down?

5% down (or injection) is the least amount a borrower needs to inject. Typical it’s anywhere between 5% to 20%. There are some instances now where Borrowers can put 0 down and have the owner provide “the down payment”!

What industries are you seeing a lot of interest in at this time for SBA loan financing (business purchases)?

I am seeing a lot of health care oriented companies such as hospice, RCFE’s, delivery routes, specialty dealerships, mail box stores, contractor oriented businesses – landscaping, HVAC, remodeling, specialty restaurants, etc.

What are typical SBA loan interest rates at this time?

The prime interest rate is at 8.50% at this point in time. The “spread” is anywhere between 2.25% to 3% – this is the rate you add to the prime rate to get your total interest rate for your SBA 7(a) loan.

Do I need collateral/equity to secure my SBA loan?

Not necessarily. I assist borrowers and brokers with many SBA loans without collateral needed. Other factors are more important like the down payment (injection), owner carry note (participation, cash flow (sellers discretionary cash) coverage (monthly debt service to cash flow), borrower work experience and how it relates to the business being purchased, etc.
